Football Leagues in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's football pyramid is structured around four key competitions tracked on this page. These competitions form the backbone of domestic football in the country, offering a pathway from youth development to the professional game. The four main competitions include:

• Premyer Liqa – the top division of Azerbaijani football
• 1 Division – the second tier, feeding into the top flight
• Cup – the national knockout tournament
• Reserve – a developmental league for emerging players

The Premyer Liqa and 1 Division are connected through promotion and relegation, ensuring a competitive dynamic. The Azerbaijan Cup involves clubs from various levels, providing exciting cup ties and a route to European competition for the winner. The Reserve league serves as a crucial platform for young talents to gain match experience and break into first-team football.

Top Competition: Premyer Liqa

The Premyer Liqa is the highest level of professional football in Azerbaijan. Comprising 11 teams, the league follows a double round-robin format where each club plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. The season traditionally runs from August to May, with the team accumulating the most points crowned champions. At the end of the season, the bottom club faces relegation to the 1 Division, while the second-tier champion earns promotion.

Qarabag stands as the most successful club in the league's history, having won the majority of titles and regularly competing in UEFA club competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League. Their dominance has raised the profile of Azerbaijani football internationally. Other notable clubs like Neftchi Baku have also enjoyed periods of success, contributing to a rich competitive history. The top teams in the Premyer Liqa qualify for European competitions, with the champion entering the Champions League qualifiers and the cup winner securing a Europa League spot.
