Werder Bremen History & Achievements

Werder Bremen was founded on 4 February 1899 by a group of students who had won a football as a prize in a tug-of-war tournament. The name 'Werder' is a German word for a river island or peninsula, a nod to the club's origins near the Weser River. Initially part of a larger sports club, football quickly became the dominant section.

The club was a founding member of the Bundesliga in 1963 and has spent the majority of its history in the top flight. Werder Bremen's first major success came in 1961 when they won the DFB-Pokal. The late 1980s and early 1990s marked a golden era under coach Otto Rehhagel, with two Bundesliga titles and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1992. The early 2000s brought another Bundesliga title and a domestic double under Thomas Schaaf.
